Dennis was born in Brisbane,
growing up in the foothills of the McPherson ranges. His parents were share
farmers in the Rathdowney district. He learnt his boiler maker trade while
living in
Inala, a housing commissioning area in Brisbane. His call to ministry
came as he served with Bodgies and Widgies at Inala Community House. He went
back to school to finish his schooling before attending Methodist Training
College to qualify as a lay preacher. In 1967 Dennis was sent to
Blackall
for a year's pastoral experience. He returned to Brisbane to complete two
university degrees, graduating in 1974. While a ministry student, Dennis and
Rosemary were married.
1974 Dennis headed off to his first placement in Cloncurry North West
Patrol. He learnt to fly a plane, bought an aircraft for the Uniting Church and launched an
aerial patrol.
Dennis served on the ministry team at
Logan Uniting
Church from 1980 to 1990 - an exciting time of church planting in a
growing housing area. While in Logan, Dennis began a 15 year term as part
time army chaplain.
From 1990 to 1997 Dennis worked as Chairman of the North Queensland
Presbytery, based in Townsville. He graduated as Doctor of Ministry through
Fuller Theological Seminary, with a
dissertation focusing on the equipping of ministers and key lay leaders
building new congregations in North Queensland.
Dennis and Rosemary have two daughters, Katische and Amanda.
